Breast reduction surgery involves a combination of skin and breast tissue removal and reshaping. The surgery aims to reduce the size and weight of large breasts by lifting the breasts off the lower chest and upper abdomen. The objective is to leave the breasts smaller and lighter, sitting higher on the chest and closer to the body.
These clinical photographs are of a 24-year-old woman before and 4 months following breast reduction surgery.
On the right breast 741g of tissue was removed and 621g from the left breast, also addressing asymmetry between the breasts, which is a common concern among women.
The nipples were also repositioned, contributing to a lifted and symmetrical appearance. This surgery was completed with an ‘anchor technique’, this refers to the pattern of skin removal and subsequent scar which resembles a simple drawing of an anchor with a circular scar around the areola sitting on top of an upside curved T, the curve lying in the native lower breast fold.
Scars are an inevitable part of any surgical incision, the final appearance in influenced by the placement on the body as well as being affected by multiple factors including genetic factors, skin quality and adherence to post-operative instructions such as rest and limiting lifting or other strenuous activity early after surgery. Scars will typically settle and fade over time, with up to 18 months before the final result can be seen.
Note: this surgery meets the criteria of Medicare item being 45523, which means that health funds will contribute to the cost of this surgery if the level of cover taken out is appropriate.
