Breast Reduction Before and After - Journey 10

21.06.23

Breast reduction surgery involves a combination of skin and breast tissue removal and reshaping. The surgery aims to reduce the size and weight of large breasts by lifting the breasts off the lower chest and upper abdomen. The objective is to leave the breasts smaller and lighter, sitting higher on the chest and closer to the body.

These photographs show a 36-year-old woman before and 5 months after she completed her breast reduction surgery with Dr Avery. During her surgery almost 300g of breast tissue was removed from each breast.

Two key components of breast reduction surgery include firstly a reduction in the size (or weight) of the breast and secondly a lift of the breast that brings the breast higher up the chest and closer to the body reducing the overall movement of the breast that is possible.

For some women this may translate to having the option of comfortably not wearing a bra. These two main components (size and lift) can vary between individuals. Therefore a surgical plan is individualised related to symptoms such as: body proportions including existing breast shape, size and finally desired breast size.

This breast reduction surgery resulted in what is commonly termed an ‘anchor scar’, this allows a reduction in the areola diameter which can become quite large in some women with large breasts, and therefore is reduced during breast reduction surgery so the areola is in proportion with the new breast size.
