Abdominoplasty Before and After - Journey 14

An abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is a surgical procedure that aims to reduce excess loose skin, primarily from the lower part of the abdomen or stomach, as well as tightening the remaining skin.

With changes to diet and a new found love of running, this 46-year-old woman lost 30kgs. Following this significant weight loss, she was concerned about the excess skin and tissue on her abdomen and how this was interfering with her daily activities. After an in-depth consultation, Dr Avery recommended a “fleur de lis” abdominoplasty, which would address the lower abdomen area and contour her sides as well. During surgery over 500mls of fat was removed from the sides and lower abdomen using liposuction. A further 2.1kg of skin and tissue was removed surgically and during the abdominoplasty and muscle separation of over 4cm was corrected.

Regular post-operative visits with the Avery team included Healite LED treatments to assist with wound recovery and scar outcome. The final scar maturation usually occurs 12-18 months following surgery. These clinical before and after photographs were taken 5 months following surgery.

For patients who have had significant weight loss and experience symptoms such as skin irritation and interference with activity, Medicare allocates the item number 30177. This in turn means that health insurers will contribute to the cost of the surgery should the level of cover be sufficient. This is great news for people who have worked hard on their weight loss and who are left with excess skin that no amount of diet or exercise will remove.
