Our Approach to Optimising Scar Management After Surgery.

26.08.25

Scar optimisation protocols play an important role in supporting recovery and helping scars to settle as well as possible after surgery.

At Avery, we recognise this is an important part of the surgical journey, so we’ve included a complementary scar-recovery service within the home care packs provided to all Avery surgical patients.

Avery's Clinical Director and Specialist Plastic Surgeon Dr Gary Avery (FRACS) said patients will receive a consult four weeks after surgery with a complimentary BroadBand Light (BBL™ HEROic) or Procell MicroChanneling treatment to help reduce redness and enhance the profile of scar maturation.

"We're committed to ensuring our service doesn't end after the surgery - we want our patients to achieve the best possible recovery and results."

"BBL™ HEROic is fantastic because it uses intense light energy to kickstart your skin cells into regenerating and healing - ultimately reducing discolouration while boosting collagen and elastin production," he said.

This is in addition to the nine or so LED Light Therapy treatments included in the surgery package.

"We will often do one session prior to surgery, and eight post-operatively."

"The light is able to penetrate superficial and deep layers of the skin, including bone, to assist with healing and inflammation."

It can also suppress the formation of hypertrophic scars, which are the thick and raised scars that occur during the healing process, while reducing pain and the risk of infection.

In addition to incorporating the power of light treatments, Avery includes the option of MicroChanneling to optimise the appearance of scars.

“We use Procell Therapies MicroChanneling guns to create micro-channels within the skin.”

Highly concentrated growth factor serums are used in combination with the gun, encouraging healing, reducing inflammation and increasing collagen production and recovery times.

For patients who haven’t been surgical patients of Avery and have existing scars they would like to improve the appearance of, we offer a range of treatments including MicroLaserPeel, HALO™, ProFractional laser and NanoLaserPeel.

"No two scars are the same so we tailor treatments on a case by case basis, looking at the type of scar and skin sensitivities, so every patient sees the safest and most optimal results."

“Regardless of the origin of your scar, always keep your scar out of the sun - apply sunblock and cover.”
