Donna Buck - Avery Custom Artwork

"When Avery engaged me to create a custom artwork for their new premise, I kept a few things in mind to guide my creative process - the colour palette of the space, the ambience of the room, and the Avery patient journey," Donna Buck.

"In reading about Dr Avery’s values and expertise, I felt an emotional response to the strong partnership between Dr Avery and his patients, and the journey they take together.

I wanted the artwork to be unique (like each person) and evoke a calm and peaceful ambience. Using an ancient technique called Encaustic painting, I made the medium from beeswax and damar tree resin, creating a custom colour palette with dry pigment to suit the décor in the space. The hot medium was applied to the surface and each layer of wax heat fused together to bind to the layer below. The making of the medium and the organic nature of painting with it was a calming experience.

Floating on the water there are some small representations of leaves, which were inspired by the beautiful floral arrangements that patients have gifted the Avery team.

During the painting process this piece had many transformations, and I allowed it to evolve naturally into the image that it became. Beginning as an abstract sweeping motion it intuitively transformed into a gently flowing stream with stability from the rocks. Symbolically, like the surgical journey patients take with the support of Avery team."
