Breast Reduction Before and After - Journey 18

Breast reduction surgery involves a combination of skin and breast tissue removal and reshaping. The surgery aims to reduce the size and weight of large breasts by lifting the breasts off the lower chest and upper abdomen. The objective is to leave the breasts smaller and lighter, sitting higher on the chest and closer to the body.

Dr Avery and the Avery Care Team met with this 51-year-old woman who had the goal of reducing her size G cup breasts. Her concerns were both the size and heaviness of her breasts and her aim for seeking out surgery was to have these reduced and repositioned higher on her chest. Following a collaborative consultation where all surgical options were discussed, including the possible risks of surgery, Dr Avery recommended bilateral breast reduction surgery.

During surgery, Dr Avery removed 699g from the patient’s left breast and 853g from the larger right breast. It is quite common for breast sizes to differ. Sometimes this can be significant – several cup sizes – or in this case, over 150g. During the surgery an areola reduction was also completed and the nipples were repositioned higher on the breast, a lift of over 11cm on both breasts.

These clinical before and after images were taken 4 months following surgery. The final results for scars are evident 12-18 months following surgery.

Medicare recognise a breast reduction as a medically necessary procedure for the treatment of macromastia and allocate the item number 45523 to the surgery. This in turn means that health insurers will also contribute to the cost of this surgery.
