Breast augmentation surgery (or augmentation mammoplasty) is a surgical procedure performed to increase the size and volume of the breast and modify the breast shape by inserting implants beneath the breast tissue. This surgery will enlarge breasts that have always been small, but can also be used to fill out breasts that used to be larger.
Pre and post-operative (6 months after surgery) photos of a 50-year-old woman who had a breast augmentation using silicone gel implants. The goals of surgery were to restore fullness to the breasts, with a natural to moderate look in proportion to her frame, and creating cleavage.
The breast augmentation has been performed with smooth round silicone gel implants, 300cc on the right and 325cc on the left to address mild asymmetry. The implants are behind the chest muscle to both reduce the chance of seeing the edge of the implant and to reduce the long term risk of capsular contracture. The incision was made under the breast (or in the inframammary fold), which is both typical in breast augmentation surgery and is generally hidden well. Breast augmentation scars will fade over time, with 12 months or more the typical time required for scars to fade to their best.
